Tom SHeely: I started working with my hands at a very young age. I began with wooden furniture, tables and barrel top chests, but my passion of working with metal developed when I took a blacksmithing class with the Guild of Metalsmiths. I was jump started by this experience and then started looking into other medias, specifically glass blowing, glass fusing and most of all fine metal/jewelry smithing. I’ve studied under many artists and craftsmen, but my greatest mentor has been a local artist, and now close friend, Judd Nelson. He introduced me to welding sculpture and allowed me to work at his side as an apprentice. He encourages me to add my own flare to everything I do, big and small. I branched off from his teachings and found my high school’s jewelry teacher Terry Chamberlin. She recognized my potential and pushed me to continue to higher studies in jewelry. With Mrs. C, Judd and my many friends in the Guild at my back pushing me forward I’ve been acquiring skills faster than I could have ever hoped.
